State's Mallard Numbers Align With Recent Estimates; Total Ducks in Arkansas Much Lower Than Long-Term Average
LITTLE ROCK – While most of Arkansas has endured the driest fall on record, mallards have migrated into the state on a series of cold fronts and have settled into the limited habitat areas in numbers that line up with the most recent December estimates, according to Luke Naylor, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission's waterfowl program coordinator.
AGFC biologists conducted their first aerial waterfowl survey of the season last week, Dec. 4-7, counting birds in the Mississippi Alluvial Valley (Delta), the Arkansas River Valley and southwest Arkansas. Observers estimated 791,399 ducks in the Delta region, including an estimated 432,977 mallards, The Delta mallard population estimate is lower than the 2009-2017 long-term December average of slightly fewer than 680,000, but is similar to the average for the last six December surveys and slightly below than the December 2016 estimate of 445,364 mallards.
Mallard estimates were highest in the Bayou Meto-Lower Arkansas River, Lower St. Francis River and Black River-Upper White River survey zones. More than 47 percent of the mallards were in rice fields, and 80 percent of the mallards in the Delta were in five habitat types: rice fields, buckbrush/buttonbush wetlands, aquaculture reservoirs, agriculture reservoirs and moist-soil units.
Duck estimates for the Arkansas River Valley numbered 13,448, with 4,134 of those being mallards. Mallards in that region were distributed among oxbow lakes (75 percent), most-soil habitat (18 percent) and farm ponds (5 percent). The southwest Arkansas duck population numbered 34,822, including 15,487 mallards.
The estimated 839,669 total ducks counted in last week's survey is much lower than the long-term average of over 1.27 million ducks for this survey period, Naylor said.
With little if any rain and no natural flooding via runoff, flooded area is limited to locations with artificial flooding capabilities, Naylor said. "Private landowners typically provide a majority of this early habitat in most years, and this fall is no exception. Public land managers (AGFC and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service) also were implementing staged flooding of non-forested wetlands during the survey period. Observers noted the largest concentration of ducks in flooded fields located among a complex of flooded fields. Isolated fields rarely had substantial numbers of ducks."
