Historic wildlife conservation act makes leap forward

WASHINGTON, DC — Wildlife conservation efforts across Arkansas may see a dramatic boost in the near future, thanks to the passage of the Recovering America’s Wildlife Act by the U.S. House of Representatives last week.

AGFC biologists round up Lake Erling catfish in rodeo for new study

TAYLOR – Biologists from the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission spent a week in June getting a good look at the size and scope of the flathead and blue catfish swimming the waters of Lake Erling, in the southwest corner of the state. The verdict from the study is yet to be determined until samples are analyzed, but the initial view is that Lake Erling has some big catfish, to be sure.

Comment on proposed Arkansas fishing regulations changes

LITTLE ROCK — The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission is asking for public comments on possible changes to fishing regulations for 2021. Changes to general fishing rules, rules for commercial anglers and fish farms are all being evaluated before the Fisheries Division formally proposes them to the Commission in August. The AGFC posted a survey to gather public input in May which will close July 17.

Catalpa worms make excellent natural bait for summer fishing

JONESBORO — Fish bait can be found in many forms at most tackle retailers. Worms, crickets, minnows, wax worms and other creatures fill boxes and bins. Prepared baits are also found in a wide variety of forms, smells and textures. All of these baits have their place and time on a hook, but few rival a natural seasonal bait that shows up in Arkansas in mid-summer: the catalpa worm.

Rob Finley appointed new Arkansas Game and Fish Commissioner

LITTLE ROCK — Governor Asa Hutchinson announced Friday the appointment of Rob Finley of Mountain Home to the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. Finley will fill the seat of Commissioner Ken Reeves of Harrison, who will end his term at the end of June.

Blue-green algae advisory lifted at Lake Overcup

MORRILTON — A health advisory warning against swimming in and allowing pets and livestock to drink from Lake Overcup has been lifted, according to biologists with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.
