SPRINGDALE — Arkansas squirrel hunters have two big dates to remember this year. May 15 is the annual opening day of squirrel season, and September 23 will be the best way to use those tasty squirrels. That’s the day the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s J.B. and Johnelle Hunt Family Ozark Highlands Nature Center will host Joe Wilson and the 2023 World Champion Squirrel Cook Off.

HOT SPRINGS — Once the early morning thunderstorms had passed Saturday, the day turned out to be perfect for fishing and the Arkansas Game and Fish Foundation’s 5th annual Commissioners’ Cup, presented by XPress Boats, on Lake Hamilton. Brothers Dakota and Dalton Reid, with their dad serving them as boat captain, had the biggest two-person haul of the day – 18.66 pounds with a five-bass stringer – to win the senior division.

Turkey-poaching trend troubling Arkansas game wardens

LITTLE ROCK — With last year’s increase in turkey reproduction and a strong start to the 2023 spring turkey season, biologists and staff at the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission are cautiously optimistic about recent trends in Arkansas’s turkey woods. One trend that still has AGFC game wardens concerned is the continued use of bait by some poachers to illegally shoot their turkeys.

Youth Shooting Sports regional tournaments begin Friday

JACKSONVILLE — Nearly 5,400 boys and girls statewide signed up for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s Youth Shooting Sports Program this spring, and the first of four regional tournaments starts this Friday and Saturday, April 28-29, to determine which of those kids’ teams are the best in 2023.
