POCAHONTAS — The only thing people are breaking out the shotguns for may be turkey, but that doesn’t mean Arkansas Game and Fish staff aren’t hard at work laying the groundwork for next year’s duck season on public hunting areas and waterfowl rest areas. It’s planting season for most farmers, and the same holds true for land managers looking to put more food on the table for next year’s migration in the state’s 8,800 acres of intensively managed moist soil habitat.
Students at Subiaco Academy take first steps into the outdoors

SUBIACO — With 500 acres of wooded terrain beside Mount Magazine Wildlife Management Area, Subiaco Academy has enjoyed a rich history of introducing young men to the outdoors as well as preparing them for productive lives. However, during the last few decades, as pursuits sports and other extracurricular activities have become increasingly organized and some of the more outdoors-oriented faculty have left, there has been a need to revitalize outdoor experiences at the school. Nick McDaniel, a new science teacher on the hill, was hired with the goal of reinvigorating the school’s outdoor program.

LITTLE ROCK — Col. Brad Young isn’t just chief of law enforcement for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, he’s a dyed-in-the-wool hunter who was introduced to the turkey woods by his grandfather when he was 7 years old. During more than 30 years in the turkey woods, he’s learned quite a few tricks through trial-and-error, and has seen many face frustration when they wear a turkey vest for the first time. While he’s not about to give up the goods on his favorite turkey hunting locations, Young does have some great advice for everyone as we begin to see people heading to the woods in search of their first Arkansas gobbler.
Lake Poinsett Rededicated, Ready for Boating, Anglers

HARRISBURG – Lake Poinsett was officially rededicated Tuesday with Arkansas Game and Fish Commission staff and local officials on hand at Lake Poinsett State Park to celebrate the completion of the lake’s $3.5 million renovation.
Ozark Society documentary celebrates Buffalo River

LITTLE ROCK – The Central Arkansas Library System and the Ozark Society will present a free showing of First River: How Arkansas Saved a National Treasure, a new documentary directed by Michelle West in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Buffalo River’s designation as the country’s first national river, at CALS Ron Robinson Theater at 7 p.m., April 7. Stewart Noland and Marvin Schwarz of the Ozark Society, which led the effort to prevent the Buffalo from being dammed, will lead a question and answer session following the one-hour documentary.
