AGFC lowers booms on giant salvinia spread at Lake Columbia and beyond

MAGNOLIA – Giant salvinia, a highly invasive aquatic plant that was first detected in Lake Columbia in December 2019, has the full attention of Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s Fisheries Division. AGFC biologists have partnered with multiple agencies in attempts to slow its potential spread not only in this lake, but in other nearby waterways.
AGFC begins major hatchery renovation in North Arkansas

MAMMOTH SPRING — Arkansas Game and Fish Commissioners yesterday celebrated a successful partnership with trout anglers to begin a major renovation to the Jim Hinkle Spring River Fish Hatchery today in Fulton County. The hatchery is the only state-owned fish hatchery in Arkansas devoted to the production of trout.

LITTLE ROCK — The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission will again offer a variety of free options to have harvested deer tested for chronic wasting disease during the 2021-22 deer hunting season. In all, 105 testing locations will be available throughout the state to have your deer tested for CWD.

Bows that were obnoxiously loud and required a heavy draw weight have been replaced by lighter, whisper-quiet bows thats shoot arrows lightning fast at a minimal draw weight. Arrows have become more durable, consistent and forgiving and the choices in broadheads range from traditional deep-penetrating fixed-blade heads to devastating mechanicals that cut a huge swath through flesh. Clothing comes in a wide range of camo patterns to hide the human profile from the keen eyes of a whitetail and is also designed to lessen the scent dispersion of a hunter. All these are important, but one sector of hunting gear that is vital to a safe hunt has also seen great advances. Fall arrest systems have transitioned from simple belts to harnesses that will keep a hunter safe should an unexpected fall occur.
Gov. Hutchinson unveils Arkansas Duck Stamp at National Hunting and Fishing Day proclamation

LITTLE ROCK — Gov. Asa Hutchinson unveiled the artwork that will appear on the 2021-22 Arkansas State Duck Stamp today at his official proclamation of Sept. 25 as National Hunting and Fishing Day in Arkansas and the week leading up to it as Arkansas Hunting and Fishing Week. The proclamation, which took place at the Arkansas State Capitol Rotunda, signifies the importance of hunting, fishing and outdoors recreation to The Natural State.
AGFC provides $769,000 to Arkansas schools for conservation education

LITTLE ROCK — Commissioners with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission passed a minute order at today’s meeting to transfer $769,564 to the Arkansas Division of Rural Services to offer grants for conservation education efforts throughout Arkansas. The money was collected during the last year from fines for wildlife and fishing regulations violations.
