Jennifer Ballard, Arkansas Game and Fish Commission Veterinarian, will talk about health in conservation with topics on Avian Influenza and health effects of ticks. Jon Stein, AGFC Fisheries District Supervisor, will talk about the Enhancement of Beaver Lake Fish Habitat.

ROGERS — The AGFC and Hook, Line and Sinker Outdoors are looking for volunteers interested in improving the fishing at Beaver Lake in Northwest Arkansas. They will host another round of Beaver Lake Habitat days Friday and Saturday, Oct, 14-15 to sink trees in the upper end of the lake in the Joe Creek area.

ROGERS — Some people might be a bit squeamish if they saw a fish as long as them swimming directly under where they were floating. Chris Cantrell of Berryville, Arkansas, swam toward such a beast and managed to land it using spearfishing tackle early Saturday morning at Beaver Lake. Cantrell shot a 90-pound, 12-ounce paddlefish and wrestled it to the surface, possibly breaking the spearfishing world-record mark for the species.

LITTLE ROCK — Last month Jon Stein, Arkansas Game and Fish Commission fisheries biologist in northwest Arkansas, had the opportunity to present to AGFC commissioners and the public the highlights from the latest large-scale habitat project at Beaver Lake. Biologists created 145 new fish attractor locations during the project, but it’s only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to habitat and fish-attracting cover the AGFC has placed in the last five years. Thanks to the AGFC’s interactive map, you can get the exact GPS location of each fish attractor to load to your smartphone or fishfinder to get a head start on the search for more fish.

ROGERS — Arkansas Game and Fish Commission crews used chainsaws to gnaw down nearly 900 invasive cedar trees during the last two weeks and recycled them into valuable fish habitat at Beaver Lake in northwest Arkansas.

Jon Conklin, the Fishing Report's regular reporter from Beaver Lake, guided a couple of clients from Kansas, Danny Meideros and his son, Manny, on the lake last Saturday and the Kansans put a true trophy in the boat. Danny and son caught a 32-pound striped bass; Jon says they were using bream for bait. "Stripers have been fair to good lately," Jon adds. Obviously.
