Turkey harvest, hunting opportunities increase in 2023

LITTLE ROCK — With the last weekend of the 2023 Arkansas turkey season in the rearview mirror, hunters have tallied 9,193 checked birds. This is an increase of 21% percent from 2022 and the first time since 2017 that the harvest topped the 9,000-bird mark. And that's not the only increase to gobble about.

AGFC and USFWS to evaluate deer disease in south Arkansas

STRONG — In response to the recent detection of a deer with chronic wasting disease in Union County, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and USDA APHIS Wildlife Services will conduct a sampling effort on Felsenthal National Wildlife Refuge during the next week to further understand the prevalence of the disease in south Arkansas.

AGFC, TNC add 1,165 acres of outdoor opportunity in south Arkansas

LITTLE ROCK — Thanks to a $1.35 million Recovery Land Acquisition Grant from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commision authorized Director Austin Booth to complete the acquisition of 1,165 acres adjacent to Beryl Anthony Lower Ouachita Wildlife Management Area at today’s meeting at the Arkansas State University Alumni Center. The Union County property, which is being purchased from The Nature Conservancy, will be added to the AGFC’s WMA system, adding even more public access for hunters, anglers and other outdoor recreationists in south Arkansas.

Commission authorizes new boat access to Bayou Bartholomew

LITTLE ROCK – The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission unanimously approved at today’s regularly scheduled meeting the use of Marine Fuel Tax funds to build a boat ramp to Bayou Bartholomew at its intersection with Arkansas Highway 277 in Drew County.

CROSSETT - Hunters in south Arkansas soon will have more than 3,600 new acres of public land to pursue their passion, thanks to the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s approval to purchase a large block of land bordering Beryl Anthony Lower Ouachita Wildlife Management Area at its March 22 meeting.
