Free CWD testing available on opening weekend of deer season in 11 Arkansas counties

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission will have voluntary biological sampling stations set up in each of the 11 counties contained in the Chronic Wasting Disease Management Zone this weekend for hunters to get their deer tested for free.

Since chronic wasting disease was discovered in Arkansas in February 2016, biologists have collected thousands of samples from deer and elk taken by hunters, from targeted animals showing signs of the disease and from road-killed deer throughout the state. In addition to samples taken to establish the disease’s spread and prevalence, the AGFC is offering a convenient way for hunters to have their deer tested for CWD at participating taxidermists and veterinarians.

AGFC holding public meeting about CWD in Van Buren County

Although chronic wasting disease has not been found in Van Buren County, it’s close. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission wants to give the public an opportunity to learn more about the disease at a public meeting in Clinton. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m., Sept. 19, at the Petit Jean Electric Cooperative Community Room at 270 Quality Drive.

Wildlife Researchers Share CWD Knowledge at Little Rock Workshop

State wildlife agency representatives and researchers from seven states, the National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, and the Southeast Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study met July 12-13 to discuss recent findings about chronic wasting disease and to identify research priorities for the state and region.

CWD Management Zone expands to include Van Buren County

Van Buren County is the latest area to be placed under special wildlife regulations to curb the spread of chronic wasting disease, as the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission added it to the official CWD Management Zone.
