LITTLE ROCK – Weather permitting, portions of Trusten Holder, Seven Devils, Cut-off Creek, Freddie Black Choctaw Island and St. Francis Sunken Lands Wildlife Management Areas may be closed to daytime public access next week. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service Wildlife Services, in cooperation with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, will be conducting aerial operations aimed at reducing feral hog populations on the WMAs.
New farm bill funds conservation opportunities on private land in Arkansas

LITTLE ROCK — The passage of the 2018 Farm Bill, signed into law on Dec. 20, offers renewed hope for conservation-minded landowners who are looking for ways to benefit wildlife habitat on their property without drastically losing production revenue from farming or other agricultural land uses. While much of the bill supports subsidies and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, roughly $5 billion has been earmarked for conservation funding in the next five years.
USDA program removes 615 feral hogs from WMAs and private land

LITTLE ROCK – Last week, crews from the Arkansas and Tennessee/Kentucky U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service Wildlife Services, in cooperation with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission and Missouri Department of Conservation, removed 615 feral hogs on both public and private land in northeast and southeast Arkansas. Feral hogs were removed from Trusten Holder, Cut-off Creek, Choctaw Island and Big Lake wildlife management areas and adjoining private lands.
Choctaw Island WMA emergency closure approved

LITTLE ROCK – The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission has approved the emergency closure of the Freddie Black Choctaw Island Wildlife Management Area Deer Research Area East Unit. The WMA will be closed March 2-3 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

NRCS announces incentive program for feral swine management

LITTLE ROCK – USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service State Conservationist Mike Sullivan has announced producers in 10 Arkansas counties can sign up for a feral swine management program for funding consideration through Feb. 23, 2018.
