Major fish habitat projects continue for large north Arkansas lakes

MOUNTAIN HOME - Frigid temperatures and shorter days may have many people’s eyes focused on the deer stand or duck blind, but Arkansas Game and Fish Commission biologists and staff have been fighting frozen noses and numb fingers for the last week adding massive amounts of natural cover to Norfork Lake.

ARKADELPHIA - More than 11,000 cubic feet of new cover for anglers to fish sits at the bottom of DeGray Lake in Clark and Hot Springs counties, thanks to the efforts of Arkansas Game and Fish Commission staff from across the state. Two-hundred and forty near-permanent fish attractors were dropped in various locations of the 13,800-acre Corps of Engineers reservoir.

Biologists and information professionals have worked together to list all known fish attractor locations placed by the AGFC in the last decade.
Downtown Little Rock Christmas Tree provides year-round enjoyment

LITTLE ROCK - Little Rock’s Christmas tree, which spent the holiday season wowing visitors on Capitol Avenue and Main Street, borrowed a page from New York City’s tree this year, with a small twist. Rockefeller Plaza trees historically have been used as lumber for Habitat for Humanity homes. Little Rock’s tree also was used for habitat, but it will stay true to The Natural State’s motto. The habitat it creates will benefit one of Little Rock’s family fishing destinations.

As cold fronts finally begin to push the mercury down in Arkansas, many fair-weather fishermen have called it quits for the season, but that doesn’t mean the work stops for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. Fisheries biologists and technicians from across the state have been diligently working for the last week to enhance fishing opportunities on Bull Shoals Lake in northwest Arkansas, even though many anglers won’t see the impact of these efforts until the weather warms.
