Invasive zebra mussels confirmed in Arkansas aquarium/pet stores

LITTLE ROCK — The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission has confirmed that some aquarium and pet stores in The Natural State have been offering for sale an aquarium product that may contain zebra mussels, a highly invasive species that can cause severe damage to the food chain and infrastructure in native lakes and rivers.
AGFC’S Hogan hatchery improvements to increase efficiency

LONOKE — Thanks to a planned renovation, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s Joe Hogan State Fish Hatchery will soon be able to increase efficiency and provide even more benefit to Arkansas anglers. The next phase of the Hogan renovation, slated for this year, includes the engineering and construction of an indoor spawning and hatching facility for warmwater species raised at the hatchery.

As the weather cools, and many outdoors enthusiasts begin to put away their boats for winter, some are cashing in on the solitude and lower fishing pressure on their favorite lake. But as their catch rates increase, so do their chances of catching some fish that may be a bit unsightly. Many anglers send in photos to fisheries biologists and the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s Facebook page this time of year with bass or crappie that look like they’ve got a bad case of acne.

Lake Charles drawdown to begin Nov. 15 for waterfowl, fish habitat benefits

POWHATAN — The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission will conduct a planned drawdown of Lake Charles at least 8 feet below normal pool beginning Nov. 15 and lasting through January 2021. The released water will be used to inundate greentree reservoirs at Shirey Bay Rainey Brake Wildlife Management are for waterfowl habitat.
Water gardens gaining ground on Arkansas fisheries

ARKADELPHIA — When Sean Lusk graduated from Auburn University with a master’s degree in fisheries management, he never dreamed his future would include taking up water gardening in Arkansas, but during the last two years he and other biologists have been hard at work planting, potting and growing aquatic vegetation in an effort to restore the once vibrant fishery at DeGray Lake.
