Youths 15 and and under, active military and veterans have a duck hunt day in Arkansas all to themselves on Saturday, the first of two special hunt days for this season. Everyone else can be back in the duck woods on Dec. 11 for the second portion of the 60-day season.

LITTLE ROCK — There’s something about the thrill of harvesting mallards in a greentree reservoir that has put it at the top of many waterfowl hunters’ bucket lists. If one of those birds is sporting a band on its leg, that small piece of aluminum is likely to go into a keepsake box to be handed down to children with stories of Arkansas’s famous flooded timber. But bird bands are much more than mementos or status symbols; they’re one of the first “citizen science” projects ever developed for conservation.

An enormous number of snows, blues and Ross's geese were seen in a field in Arkansas County not far from Brett Morgan Halowell Reservoir last week. The Light Goose Conservation Order for hunting these geese is in effect through Feb. 7 and from Feb. 9-April 25 throughout Arkansas.

First statewide youth and veterans waterfowl hunt this weekend

LITTLE ROCK – This Saturday marks the first time in Arkansas history that members of the armed services and veterans will have a special day in the wetlands chasing ducks and geese. The Special Active Duty Military and Veteran Waterfowl Hunt will take place alongside Arkansas’s Special Youth Waterfowl Hunt Dec. 7, 2019 and Feb. 8, 2020.
