LITTLE ROCK — According to the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s recently released “2023 Hunting Incident Report,” Arkansas hunters last year reported the fewest number of hunting accidents requiring medical attention since 2010. Sixteen incidents were recorded, including two resulting in fatalities.
Summer course keeps archers at full draw

MAYFLOWER — The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission and Arkansas Bowhunters Association will hold a special “Introduction to Bowhunting and 3-D Archery Tournaments” workshop from 8:30-11:30 a.m., Aug. 5, at the AGFC’s Fiocchi Shooting Sports Complex in Mayflower (formerly known as the Camp Robinson Shooting Range).
Youth shooters move to state championship round at Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE — What started out in April as a competition drawing nearly 5,400 young trap shooters ranging from fifth grade to seniors in high school has been whittled down to about 640 boys and girls who will compete this weekend (June 2-3) to be the best youth shooters in Arkansas.

LITTLE ROCK — Members of Delta Waterfowl, a nonprofit organization focused on the conservation of waterfowl and the pursuit of waterfowl hunting, might just find a few familiar names in the 2022 Annual Hunt issue of the organization’s magazine. Commissioner Anne Marie Doramus of Little Rock and Luke Naylor, the newly promoted Arkansas Game and Fish Commission chief of wildlife management, were both featured for their work in Delta’s innovative hunter recruitment effort, the University Hunting Program.

SUBIACO — With 500 acres of wooded terrain beside Mount Magazine Wildlife Management Area, Subiaco Academy has enjoyed a rich history of introducing young men to the outdoors as well as preparing them for productive lives. However, during the last few decades, as pursuits sports and other extracurricular activities have become increasingly organized and some of the more outdoors-oriented faculty have left, there has been a need to revitalize outdoor experiences at the school. Nick McDaniel, a new science teacher on the hill, was hired with the goal of reinvigorating the school’s outdoor program.

Brad Young isn’t just chief of law enforcement for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, he’s a dyed-in-the-wool hunter who was introduced to the turkey woods by his grandfather when he was 7 years old. During more than 30 years in the turkey woods, he’s learned quite a few tricks through trial-and-error, and has seen many face frustration when they wear a turkey vest for the first time. While he’s not about to give up the goods on his favorite turkey hunting locations, Young does have some great advice for everyone as we begin to see people heading to the woods in search of their first Arkansas gobbler.
