LITTLE ROCK — Thanks to a proclamation signed by Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders last week, Sept. 23 has officially been named National Hunting and Fishing Day in Arkansas. With the fall weather finally arriving, it’s a perfect time to take someone new into the outdoors and pass on a passion for conservation. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission has cooked up the following five ways anyone can enjoy the benefits of hunting and angling on this special day:
Arkansas hunting injuries hit 13-year low

LITTLE ROCK — According to the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s recently released “2023 Hunting Incident Report,” Arkansas hunters last year reported the fewest number of hunting accidents requiring medical attention since 2010. Sixteen incidents were recorded, including two resulting in fatalities.
Nonresident hunters should check twice for new permits when renewing licenses

LITTLE ROCK — Every July, many Arkansas hunters make it a point to renew their hunting licenses to ensure they’re legal and ready for the next year of enjoying all The Natural State has to offer. This year, nonresidents also may have to purchase a few additional permits if they plan to engage in a few of the state’s calling card hunts.
Get to the squirrel woods and cook up some fun

SPRINGDALE — Arkansas squirrel hunters have two big dates to remember this year. May 15 is the annual opening day of squirrel season, and September 23 will be the best way to use those tasty squirrels. That’s the day the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s J.B. and Johnelle Hunt Family Ozark Highlands Nature Center will host Joe Wilson and the 2023 World Champion Squirrel Cook Off.
AGFC Wildlife Officers honor veterans and families at Squirrel-a-palooza 2023

MT IDA — On the last weekend of January, Arkansas Game and Fish Commission wildlife officers joined Warrior Hunts for its annual “Squirrel-a-palooza” hunt for veterans and their families. This was the seventh year in a row that the AGFC helped put on this hunt honoring our nation’s armed forces.
Yellville youth hunters dominate statewide squirrel hunt

YELLVILLE — With more than 110 teams participating in last weekend’s statewide Big Squirrel Challenge, hunters young and old were rekindling the passion of small game hunting throughout Arkansas. When the sound of rimfire rifles and shotguns had ended for the morning and weigh-ins were concluded, it was a youth team in northern Arkansas who turned in the day’s heaviest three-squirrel limit.
