LITTLE ROCK — With turkey hunting season wrapped up, many hunters will be putting away their shotguns until fall, but there’s another spring season that gives Arkansas hunters plenty of reasons to keep the scattergun cleaned and ready. Arkansas’s squirrel season opens May 15, and for those who enjoy chasing these treetop targets, it’s a great excuse to be in the woods.

FORT SMITH — Despite hunters from eight locations in Arkansas bringing in squirrels to be weighed for this weekend’s inaugural Big Squirrel Challenge, it was bushytail fanatics from western Arkansas who claimed top honors in this year’s statewide squirrel-hunting contest put on by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.

This time he’s giving up the goods on a bayou classic: boudin.

Plug removal at Hurricane Lake WMA complete

BALD KNOB — The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission completed work to remove clogged culverts and install stream crossings on Mallard Pond Road at Henry Gray Hurricane Lake Wildlife Management Area last week and the road will be able to see some traffic this weekend in time for the second segment of the 2021-22 waterfowl season.
