AGFC adds 975 acres to Cypress Bayou WMA

BEEBE - Thanks to a partnership with The Trust for Public Land and the National Wild Turkey Federation, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission has added 975 acres of access for hunters to Cypress Bayou Wildlife Management Area in White County, boosting that WMA to approximately 2,638 acres of publicly accessible wildlife habitat.

BISMARCK – Arkansas’s harvest of wild turkeys during April’s 16-day season continued in the declining direction seen for the past 14 years. The 7,885 birds reported harvested by hunters, which included those harvested during a two-day youth hunt preceding the regular season, was a precipitous and concerning fall from 2017’s 10,000-plus harvest turkeys in state.

If you want to hear that tom gobble and head to your set on opening morning, you have to exercise a little patience. According to a veteran with more than 35 years under his turkey vest, stomping around in the woods now can be one of the worst things you can do if you’re going to see a bird when it matters.

LITTLE ROCK – If you didn’t draw a wildlife management area turkey hunt permit during the regular drawing, there’s still a chance to get a spot to hunt some of Arkansas’s most popular WMAs. All leftover permits will be available at www.agfc.com on a first-come, first-served online sale beginning 8 a.m., March 12.

One of the best ways to be successful on public land is to apply for one of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s wildlife management area turkey hunt permits beginning Jan. 15. 

Hunter observations can help complete wildlife management puzzle

Deer hunters can use their smartphones in order to assist the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission with wildlife management efforts. The AGFC’s free Deer Hunting Observation Survey is part of the AGFC app that can be downloaded to either Apple or android smartphones.  This mobile survey quickly allows hunters to record sightings of game species such as deer, bear, quail, turkey, and furbearers and also nongame species such as feral hogs while hunting.
