Quirky pack animals aid public land experiences

SPRINGDALE — Thanks to a decades-old partnership, the U.S. Forest Service and the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission are able to offer over a million acres of public hunting opportunity in the Ouachita and Ozark/St. Francis National Forests. Getting the most out of remote portions of these rugged lands, however, takes a little extra effort. Arkansas outfitter Casey Brewster has discovered the therapeutic power of hunting and relaxing in these out-of-the-way public lands, thanks to some ingenuity and a few surefooted assistants. He and his organization lead veterans and first responders on special multiple day hunting trips using pack goats to get their supplies where they need to go.

MT IDA — On the last weekend of January, Arkansas Game and Fish Commission wildlife officers joined Warrior Hunts for its annual “Squirrel-a-palooza” hunt for veterans and their families. This was the seventh year in a row that the AGFC helped put on this hunt honoring our nation’s armed forces.

Commission pursues opportunity with ASU to expand Cypress Bayou Wildlife Management Area

LITTLE ROCK — The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission voted unanimously at today’s meeting to authorize the agency’s director to enter into a 10-year cooperative agreement with Arkansas State University to manage a 160-acre tract bordering Cypress Bayou WMA in White County and allow public hunting access to that property under the current regulations of the wildlife management area.

LITTLE ROCK — Duck hunters looking for a shot to finish the season on a high note will have one day to enjoy all-day hunting on all Arkansas Game and Fish Commission wildlife management areas this year. On Jan. 31, duck hunters may hunt WMAs from 30 minutes before sunrise until sunset to wrap up Arkansas’s regular duck season.
First youth and veteran waterfowl hunt of Arkansas’s 2020-21 season Saturday

LITTLE ROCK - The ducks have a brief rest between the segments of hunting season, but on Saturday, the first of two youth and veteran waterfowl hunts will have hunters back in the woods in search of Arkansas’s premiere game species. This year’s Special Active Duty Military and Veteran Waterfowl Hunt will again take place alongside Arkansas’s Special Youth Waterfowl Hunt Dec. 5, 2020, and Feb. 6, 2021.
