Description

Narrow ridges characterize the topography with sharp, winding tops, steep side slopes and narrow valleys between the ridges. Two streams head up on the area, Scatter Creek on the north and Locust Creek on the south. The area is dotted with old field systems which are maintained as permanent open land to add diversity to the landscape.

Hunting Opportunities

Game species found on the area are deer, turkey, squirrel and rabbit. The area supports good populations of deer and turkeys. Check the current regulations guide for season dates and regulations. Squirrel hunting is usually considered to be good on the area. Old field systems support good numbers of rabbits.

Location

William E. Brewer Scatter Creek WMA lies 34 miles north of Jonesboro, 7 miles NE of Paragould and 23 miles SE of Pocahontas and is located on Crowley's Ridge and is in Deer Zone 5

Management Practices

Open lands and old field systems are intensively managed by a combination specialized plantings, small grain crops and legumes, mechanical vegetation control and prescribed fire. This provides supplemental and emergency food supplies for a variety of wildlife species as well as nesting habitat and escape cover for quail, turkeys and non game species.

Ownership

AGFC 833-200-5199 • 5,002 acres

To date, about 5,000 acres have been purchased through cooperative efforts by the Commission, the Greene County Wildlife Club, the nature Conservancy and the national Wild Turkey Federation. As of April, 1999, Commission ownership is comprised of four separate parcels, divided by private land. Continued land purchases are directed at the overall objective of enlarging the area by purchasing properties that connect and consolidate current ownership.

Purpose

Purchase of this area was assisted by local interests and the Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission to conserve and protect a part of the diminishing Crowley's Ridge Upland Game Habitat, and to provide additional public lands to meet the ever increasing demand for outdoor recreational opportunity related to fish, wildlife and other natural resources.

Recreation Other Than Hunting

Interior roads and trails are off limits to motorized vehicles, but offer excellent opportunity for hiking, photography, wildlife observance or bird watching. The area is very scenic year round, especially in spring and during the peak fall color period. There is a 12-station rifle/pistol range on the area just off Arkansas Highway 34. The range is open from sunrise to sunset all year except for firearms deer and turkey seasons.

Restaurants and Other Facilities

A pavilion is located at the south end of the Spain tract on highway 34. Available by reservation only. Contact the Jonesboro Regional Office for information at 833-200-5199. Overnight lodging, a variety of restaurants and entertainment is available in Paragould or Jonesboro. Signs designate roads and trails available for use by handicapped permit holders.

Safety

Topographic maps are: Lafe, Paragould West, available from the Arkansas Geological Survey 501-296-1877. Non hunting visitors are encouraged to wear hunter orange if visiting the area during modern gun deer seasons, for safety reasons. No unusual health or safety hazards are known to be present on the area.
