Lake June is located in the city of Stamps Arkansas in Lafayette County. The lake has a surface area of 32.4 ha (80 acres), and an average depth of 1.8 m (6 ft). Lake June was constructed in the late 1800’s as a millpond for the Bodcaw Lumber Company in Stamps. After the lumber company closed, the lake and surrounding land was transferred to the City of Stamps for recreational use. Due to the age of the reservoir, most of the fish habitat in Lake June had decayed away or was buried in silt, leaving mats of emergent aquatic vegetation and short cypress stumps as the principle fish habitat. Additionally, most of the areas accessible to bank fisherman had become extremely shallow due to excessive siltation. Due to complete undermining of the spillway, an inoperable water control structure, and numerous fish habitat issues, AGFC entered into a collaborative agreement with the City of Stamps and Lafayette County to renovate Lake June. The levee was notched in July 2016, with renovation activities beginning in August 2017 and continuing into 2018. The renovation was completed in early 2019 and restocking was conducted shortly thereafter.
Despite serious fish habitat issues, Lake June remained a locally popular fishery for Largemouth Bass, crappie, Bluegill, Redear Sunfish, and Channel Catfish until the lake was drained. It is expected that the fish habitat improvements and infrastructure repairs outlined here will have substantial positive impacts on both Lake June and surrounding communities.
Past fisheries management has largely consisted of sporadic fish population sampling using electrofishing and shoreline seining methods, fish stockings, and vegetation control.
