Youth, Veterans and Active Military Finish Duck Season on Saturday

LITTLE ROCK – Arkansas's regular waterfowl hunting season concluded last Friday; however, youth, veterans and active military will have one more day to hunt, and that opportunity is Saturday throughout the state.
The second of two youth hunts is Saturday. This year, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service gave the OK for veterans hunts outside of the regular allocated waterfowl hunting days, and the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission went a step further, making the Veterans Hunt also open to active military personnel. Those three groups were given a December day to themselves, and they will get Feb. 8 as well.
While the youth hunt and the veterans/active military hunts are underway Saturday, the Light Goose Conservation Order is suspended for one day. Through Friday, Feb. 7, and resuming Sunday, Feb. 9, Arkansas's Light Goose Conservation Order is in effect, allowing for the hunting of lesser snow, blue and Ross's geese with liberal regulations (no limits, no plugs in shotguns, electronic calling devices and more are allowed). The Order runs through April 25. Remember, though, that while many greater white-fronted geese (specklebellies) remain in parts of the state near the snow geese, they are not considered "light" geese and are not to be hunted. The season for specks ended with the conclusion of the regular waterfowl season Jan. 31.

During the youth waterfowl hunt, only youths 15 and younger may harvest ducks, geese, coots and mergansers. Youths who have completed a hunter education course must be accompanied by a mentor 18 or older. Youths who have not completed a hunter education course must be accompanied by a mentor 21 or older. Mentors may not hunt, but may call waterfowl. Shooting hours and bag limits are the same as the regular duck and goose seasons. Youth hunters can hunt on wildlife management areas 30 minutes before sunrise until sunset. General WMA hunter use permits are not required for youth hunters.
In October, the AGFC approved the first veterans and active military waterfowl hunts for the state. Members of active duty military and military veterans may harvest ducks, geese, coots and mergansers. Active duty military includes members of the National Guard and Reserves on active duty (other than for training). Veterans must have served in active military, naval, air service or Reserves and National Guard on Title 32 orders and must have been discharged or released under honorable conditions. In addition to a valid hunting license, state and federal waterfowl stamps, a current Harvest Information Program registration is required. Participants in this hunt also will need to carry one of the following items with them during their hunt: a DD214, a Veteran Benefit Card, Retired Active Military I.D., Veteran License or Active Duty I.D. card.
There appears to have been some confusion about the hunts from some hunters as communicated to AGFC personnel. They are seperate hunts. Veterans and active military do not have to be accompanied by a youth, or vice versa, to hunt. However, they CAN be accompanied if they so choose, making it that an even better experience for both parties.
All wildlife management areas managed for waterfowl are open for the hunts Saturday.
