Access for hunting, angling highlight 2017

LITTLE ROCK – The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission added more than 2,220 acres of access for hunters and anglers in 2017. Land for waterfowl hunting, upland game and bat conservation highlight the improvements for wildlife. A state-of-the-art weigh-in facility in Northwest Arkansas, new access for paddlers on Crooked Creek and additional bank fishing opportunity on one of the AGFC’s oldest lakes round out some of the improvements for 2017 for anglers.

LITTLE ROCK – Cold weather means cold water, and that means the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission is busy stocking Family and Community Fishing Program ponds with rainbow trout for anglers to enjoy.

All of Arkansas wasn't frozen up at midweek. There were reports coming in from the bigger lakes, however, such as Greers Ferry Lake, Beaver Lake and Norfork Lake. The chase is on for stripers (photo) in Norfork Lake, according to guide Tom Reynolds of STR Outfitters. Black bass are always good now in Greers Ferry Lake, according to Tommy Cauley.

A big fall in temperatures with accompanying snow locks up many areas for hunting at midweek, but the weather is expected to warm up by weekend, offering hunters a chance to get back into the public lands like George H. Dunklin Bayou Meto WMA (shown here) for the last two weekends of the duck season.

AGFC aeriel survey estimates recorded more than 1.2 million ducks in Arkansas in early January during frigid, icy conditions, with more than 900,000 mallards estimated. Warmer temperatures helped thaw the state from the deep freeze of a week ago, and with it more habitat became available for ducks.
