LITTLE ROCK — Each year, friends and family members of hunters, anglers and other conservationists are faced with the difficult task of trying to find a gift that says they pay attention to their passions. Each year, many hunters also quietly return the thoughtful gifts because it wasn’t quite what they need for the woods or water. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission and Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration have an excellent gift idea that won’t be returned – but you may want to act fast before they’re all taken.

DELAPLAINE — As part of its ongoing efforts to improve habitat quality for migrating waterfowl on public land, contractors with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission will continue mulching of woody vegetation and debris within Dave Donaldson Black River Wildlife Management Area in northeastern Arkansas during 2022 waterfowl season.

LITTLE ROCK — Anglers who arrive at a few Arkansas lakes during winter may be surprised to discover that the shoreline has grown since their last trip when the sun’s warmth still blanketed the state. Winter drawdowns are common among many Arkansas lakes, and although they may be a bit inconvenient at a few boat ramps, their benefits to the fishery are unmistakable.

Get more from your ground venison

Arkansas’s deer season is well underway with more than 120,000 deer harvested so far. Freezers across the state are filling with venison steaks, roasts and, of course, ground venison. Typically the loins and the tenderloins are the first cuts cooked up at home or camp, leaving a generous portion of ground venison at the bottom of the freezer. Wil Hafner, facility manager at Potlatch Cook’s Lake Nature Center in Casscoe, has a few tips and recipes to get more out of your ground venison.
