Biologists churning away at moist-soil habitat for ducks

POCAHONTAS — The only thing people are breaking out the shotguns for may be turkey, but that doesn’t mean Arkansas Game and Fish staff aren’t hard at work laying the groundwork for next year’s duck season on public hunting areas and waterfowl rest areas. It’s planting season for most farmers, and the same holds true for land managers looking to put more food on the table for next year’s migration in the state’s 8,800 acres of intensively managed moist soil habitat.

Frog Bayou and Ozark Lake WMAs reopened

ALMA – Due to the lack of available pilots, this week’s U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service Wildlife Service aerial operations at Frog Bayou and Ozark Lake wildlife management areas have been suspended. The operations are part of a program aimed at reducing feral hog populations in the areas.

Frog Bayou and Ozark Lake WMAs closed beginning April 11

ALMA – Frog Bayou and Ozark Lake wildlife management areas will be closed to daytime public access April 11-15. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service Wildlife Services, in cooperation with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, will be conducting aerial operations aimed at reducing feral hog populations in the areas. The flights will be dependent on the weather.

AGFC to renovate Lake Saracen fishing pier

PINE BLUFF — Contractors with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission will refurbish the public fishing pier on Lake Saracen beginning April 15.

Mark Crawford guided Hannah (no last name available) to a nice rainbow catch on the Spring River this past week. The Spring River has a lot of water now, making wading difficult, but the boating anglers are finding trout biting great when they add a little more weight to get the fly down. Also, Mark notes that the campgrounds have all opened for the summer season, and  they'll provide more wade access when the high water drops. Trout stockings have add more catch possibilities, too, he says.
