Shooting sports regional competition begins April 30-May 1

JACKSONVILLE – After skipping a year because of the sudden arrival of the coronavirus last spring, the Arkansas Youth Shooting Sports Program regionals and state championships are back in 2021. The first weekend of regional competition for junior high and senior high shooters is Friday and Saturday, April 30-May 1, at the Arkansas Game and Fish Foundation Jacksonville Shooting Sports Complex.

Cam Patterson, the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences chancellor and avid outdoorsman, caught this nice brown trout on the Little Red River while being guided by Casey Hughes between Ramsey and the 305 Bridge. Cam was u sing a yellow streamer. The photo was taken by Graham Patterson and made availabe via Facebook by the Little Red River Foundation.

Northeast Arkansas yields state record goldeye

MANILA – Jamie Wilhoite caught a goldeye a few years back, though at the time she and her husband, Homer, didn’t know immediately what it was. They took a photo to identify it later and gave the fish away, then wondered if that fish’s weight might have exceeded the then-listed state record for goldeye.

Sylamore WMA’s attractions include more than prevalent turkey, deer

FIFTY-SIX – When deer are in season for muzzleloaders or modern-gun hunters, Arkansas Game and Fish Commission biologist Allen Cathey says, Sylamore Wildlife Management Area will have “folks everywhere, in every direction. You have to feel your way through.” It’s also a major destination for public turkey hunting in the spring as well, he notes; Sylamore WMA ranked fourth among the top five state WMAs for turkey harvest in 2020.

A Little Rock client of guide Mike Siefert named Darrin landed this nice bass on Millwood Lake this past week. This one weighed in at about 5 pounds. Mike said bass upward of 10 pounds in weight have been caught on Millwood in the past several days. Photo provided by Mike Siefert.
