Get an extra chance at an elk hunting permit at Buffalo River Festival

JASPER – If you didn’t get a chance to apply for one of Arkansas’s public land elk permits in May, you still have a chance to get one of the onsite permits that will be drawn with the others at this year’s Buffalo River Elk Festival in Jasper on Friday, June 24, and Saturday, June 25.

Turtles taking to the streets; don’t box them in

LITTLE ROCK — Turtles are on the move all over Arkansas, and many can be found alongside roads in rural and suburban areas thanks to a wet, relatively cool spring that created excellent foraging areas in ditches and grassy areas beside the hustle of daily traffic. Many turtles are finishing up their annual breeding and egg-laying cycles, which also puts them on the move.

Naylor steps into lead wildlife role in Arkansas

LITTLE ROCK – Luke Naylor of Conway has been selected to lead the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s Wildlife Management Division, overseeing all game and nongame conservation efforts by the agency as well as public access for hunting and outdoor recreation. He replaces Brad Carner, who was promoted to AGFC Deputy Director during the AGFC’s May 19 Commission meeting.

Apply for a 2022 Arkansas alligator hunt permit

LITTLE ROCK – Applications for the 2022 Arkansas alligator season are available at www.agfc.com from 8 a.m., June 15 through midnight, June 30. Anyone interested in pursuing alligators on public land in Arkansas must apply for one of the six hunting locations within two of Arkansas’s three open Alligator Management Zones.

Olive takes helm of Arkansas fisheries

LITTLE ROCK — Jason Olive of El Dorado has been chosen to lead the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s efforts in fisheries management, hatchery production and aquatic conservation as chief of the agency’s Fisheries Division. Olive replaces former Fisheries Chief Ben Batten, who was promoted to AGFC deputy director at the May 19 Commission meeting in Little Rock.

USFWS seeks comments on Overflow and Felsenthal Refuge compatibility determinations

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced the availability of draft compatibility determinations for bicycling, hiking, backpacking and firewood cutting in the Overflow National Wildlife Refuge for public review and comment. The public comment period will extend from June 1, 2022 through June 15, 2022.
