Antlerless only hunt to wrap up 2020-21 modern gun deer season

Arkansans looking for one last chance to bag a deer at the end of the season this year will have three additional days to take a doe after the Modern Gun Christmas Holiday Hunt to fill their tag. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission unanimously voted in May to move the Private Land Antlerless Only Deer Hunt from the middle of October to the last days of December in hopes to increase participation in the hunt.

AGFC looking for deer stand research assistants

LITTLE ROCK – Hunters can help the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s wildlife management efforts through the AGFC’s free Deer Hunting Observation Survey available through the AGFC app. The app is available through both the iTunes app store and the Google Play store.

Gov. Hutchinson proclaims Sept. 26 National Hunting and Fishing Week in Arkansas

LITTLE ROCK — Arkansas Game and Fish Commissioners watched a special video at their regularly scheduled meeting today from Gov. Asa Hutchinson, recognizing Sept. 26 as National Hunting and Fishing Day in Arkansas and proclaiming the week leading up to it as Arkansas Hunting and Fishing Week.

Swallow-tailed kites successfully raise young in Arkansas after 130-year absence

FOUKE — With less than a year before his scheduled retirement, Mike Harris, an Arkansas Game and Fish Commission senior technician at Sulphur River Wildlife Management Area, completed a quest that’s been a decade in the making — documenting the first pair of swallow-tailed kites to successfully raise young in Arkansas since 1890. With the help of a live photo from an iPhone, showing adult kites feeding a fledgling, the Arkansas Audubon Society Bird Records Committee confirmed his finding in August.

Progress at Lake Poinsett

HARRISBURG — As trucks unload large gray riprap and spray improved shorelines around Lake Poinsett in Poinsett County, Brett Timmons and his natural resources program technician, Tristan Bulice from Arkansas State University, continue to drag artificial habitat structures to the bed of the lake, nearing the end of a three-year marathon. The 471-acre lake has been dry since 2017 to complete a massive renovation involving many moving parts.

Urban archery hunters see early success

HEBER SPRINGS — Last week’s rain didn’t dampen the spirits of many archers looking to score an early-season archery deer during Arkansas’s 2020-21 urban archery season. As of Monday morning, 174 deer had been checked through the AGFC’s online checking system by hunters who passed the hunt’s requirements and got in the stand for some September hunting.
