Gov. Asa Hutchinson proclaims June 11-13 Free Fishing Weekend in Arkansas

LITTLE ROCK – Thanks to a proclamation by Gov. Asa Hutchinson announced Thursday, anyone may fish in Arkansas without a fishing license or trout stamp from noon Friday, June 11, through midnight Sunday night, June 13. The proclamation was read at the beginning of the Commission's May meeting by Megan Perkins, agriculture liaison to Hutchinson’s office.

AGFC taps Veterans Affairs chief of staff to lead agency

LITTLE ROCK – Commissioners with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission unanimously voted at today’s regularly scheduled meeting to approve Austin Booth, a native of Scott, to become the agency’s 19th director in its 106-year history. He will replace Director Pat Fitts when he retires from the agency June 30.

Rae passes baton to Young as AGFC chief of enforcement

LITTLE ROCK – Brad Young credits strong mentorship through his almost 11 years with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission for preparing him well for his new role as the agency’s chief of enforcement. The 39-year-old Young, who lives in his boyhood home of Woodlawn in Cleveland County, officially takes over for the retiring Col. Greg Rae on May 31, but notes that a smooth transition has been underway since March. Young, who began his AGFC career in 2010 as a wildlife officer first class in Monticello, has worked alongside Rae as major for the past four years before being promoted to colonel and chief of the division.

Deadline for exotic bird permits July 1

LITTLE ROCK — Arkansans who have not updated or obtained their permits for owning, breeding or dealing certain exotic captive bird species have until July 1 to submit their application. This includes any permittees who may not have all the proper documentation such as bills of sale, certificates of veterinary inspection or wildlife importation permits usually required to obtain these permits for what the Commission considers captive wildlife. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission is working with these customers to get them into compliance.

AGFC looking for rice producers to participate in habitat, hunting access program

LITTLE ROCK — There’s still time for Arkansas rice growers to apply to enroll their fields in the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s Waterfowl Rice Incentive Conservation Enhancement program and earn as much as $150 per acre without impacting current production on their fields. Applications are available at www.agfc.com/wrice and will be accepted until June 1.

Nashville takes control at AYSSP South Regional tournament

JACKSONVILLE – Nashville continued its winning ways at the Arkansas Youth Shooting Sports Program South Region tournament Saturday at the Arkansas Game and Fish Foundation Jacksonville Shooting Sports Complex. Scrapper Senior 1 posted an impressive 231 of 250 to take first place in the senior division.
