LITTLE ROCK — A quick glance at Arkansas’s state fishing records will reveal that March and April hold the lion’s share of biggest fish catches for most species. Only one catch can qualify as Arkansas’s state record for a certain species, but the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission still wants to help celebrate those memorable moments on the water with a Master Angler Award.

Spring River guide Mark Crawford is excited about the smallmouth bass action that's going on on the Spring. Mark guided Chuck Lajeunesse to a nice smallie this past week. The Spring is almost at its average flow. He says, “The smallies are biting but they have been down deep in the deeper pools. Gotta work the bottom slow with a sink tip or heavy fly. Gonna hang up a lot, so bring plenty of flies. The winter time can be the best time to catch a big smallie.”
