MOUNTAIN HOME – Native to Europe, the German brown trout found in the tailwaters of Beaver, Bull Shoals, Norfork and Greers Ferry dams, typically start their spawning run during fall and winter, offering die-hard anglers a chance at some fantastic fishing. But biologists ask anglers to keep a conservation mindset when chasing these gems of the tailwater so everyone will be able to enjoy them for years to come.

Adam Mitchell's smallmouth catch in the photo may not have been the biggest fish around, but Spring River guide Mark Crawford assures that it was "a strong fighter." Adam and Mark beat the sudden winter-like temps for a good day of smallmouth fishing on the Spring, which is low right now, but the weather should turn back to brisk, fall-like temps with sun this weekend. You're never too young to start appreciating the brown trout that are prevalent in the White River at Cotter. Browns are beginning to make their reeds, the areas where they leave their eggs during spawning season, in shoals around the White, so watch out for them.
