Fall fires enhance wildlife habitat

LITTLE ROCK — Hunting enthusiasts have their sights set on deer season and are already out scouting in hopes of harvesting this year’s big buck. While most stick close to food plots, there can be some additional places to focus on this fall. One of these ‘hotspots’ looks much different than a traditional hunting location.

Saline County landowners burn their way to better habitat

BENTON – Some Arkansas private landowners aim to restore part of their acreage to experience quail or turkey hunting they may have enjoyed decades ago. Other landowners, though, may not be focused on hunting. They may just want a plan to dispense with nonnative grasses and Chinese privet dominating their land and turn those acres over to native plants more conducive to wildlife – not just quail or turkey, but the all-important pollinators and what is termed “watchable” wildlife.

Land donation increases future opportunities on White River

LITTLE ROCK – Thanks to the generosity of Dr. C.R. Magness and his wife Kay Magness, boaters and anglers will be able to access a portion of the White River in Washington County. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission authorized Director Pat Fitts to enter into a donation agreement from the Magness family for more than 4 acres of riverfront property at today’s official meeting.

LITTLE ROCK — The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission is opening up participation in the state’s annual Wild Turkey Brood Survey and Annual Northern Bobwhite Survey to the general public for the first time, thanks to a new online surveying tool.

STAR CITY - The Arkansas Game an Fish Commission will host a special workshop on improving wild turkey and northern bobwhite habitat at the C&L Electric Cooperative Building from 6 to 8 p.m., May 14. The building is at 900 Church Street in Star City.

Memphian restores acreage for quail, draws notice from Commission

EARLE – Walker Morris, who farms 250 total acres near Earle in Crittenden County, describes himself as a “recovering quail hunter.” His work to help restore the northern bobwhite earned him a Landowner Award, presented before the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission in its recent March monthly meeting. Morris was one of four landowners and families honored.
