Estimated decline in duck population only part of fall flight story

LITTLE ROCK — According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s report “Waterfowl Population Status, 2022,” released in late August, total duck population estimates in spring 2022 declined 12 percent from the last recorded survey taken in 2019, but that doesn’t necessarily sound an alarm with waterfowl managers who have seen similar fluctuations in the past.
Jackson, Naylor earn national acclaim

Two biologists with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission received high praise from national waterfowl conservation organization Delta Waterfowl during a special Champions of Delta Luncheon Saturday at the Statehouse Convention Center in Little Rock. Luke Naylor, AGFC chief of wildlife management, and Jason “Buck” Jackson, AGFC Wetlands Program coordinator, were honored with Delta Waterfowl’s Conservation Leader Award for spearheading the AGFC’s Waterfowl Rice Incentive Conservation Enhancement Program, a new effort to increase flooded rice on the landscape and offer increased hunting opportunities on managed lands.

Birders benefit from waterfowl habitat program

LITTLE ROCK — Duck hunters aren’t the only people who know and appreciate the soul-stirring sight of thousands of ducks, geese and other migratory birds descending on open fields in the Arkansas Delta. Each year, birders and other wildlife-watching enthusiasts flock to wetlands during winter to catch a glimpse of these birds as they make their annual trip between nesting grounds in the North and warmer breeding grounds below the frost belt. And thanks to the habitat offered by waterfowl-focused programs in Arkansas, these birdwatchers have more than 3,800-acres of private land to enjoy their passion through the end of winter.
