Renovation in full swing at Earl Buss Bayou DeView WMA

WEINER – Greentree reservoirs in Earl Buss Bayou DeView Wildlife Management Area in Poinsett County are getting the full attention of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission and Ducks Unlimited with major renovation work planned over two phases. Phase One began in early June with heavy machinery bringing in modern infrastructure to be installed in the WMA’s Thompson Tract GTR.

A youngster named Sydney from Tennessee caught a lunker of a rainbow trout, a fish that measured 22 inches and was caught in the Beaver Lake Dam tailwater in northwest Arkansas. Guide Austin Kennedy took Sydney and family out on the water for a memorable day.

LITTLE ROCK – Ben Batten belies the upper Midwest background that directed him on the path of outdoors and conservation work some 18 years ago. Rather, even with less of a Southern twang than most of his fellow Arkansas Game and Fish Commission employees possess, one still might mistake him for a native Arkansan in the way he seems to know every nook and cranny of this state, every fish in its waters, or the best spots to find deer, ducks and other “critters,” as he calls them.

The smallmouth bass are making a great target on the cool waters of the Spring River in northeast Arkansas. Mitch (no last name given) was fishing with Spring River guide Mark Crawford, when he caught this nice smallie on a picture-perfect day (sure, it was hot, but the lower water temp helped). Crawford said the hotter weather has helped the smallmouth bite.He says they've been chasing smallies in deeper water areas, with black or olive Woolies tied to jigheads being hot lures.

Scott Seaman from northwest Arkansas showes off his limit of walleye that he caught in the Beaver Lake tailwater while fishing recently with guide Austin Kennedy. Kennedy says that walleye are still being caught towards Beaver town and Holiday Island. "Pulling deep-diving crank baits in 20 feet of water has been the preferred method. If you find yourself on a nice school of them, jig them with soft plastics or live minnows," Kennedy said.
Four WMAs now require permits for first weekend of dove season; private land hunts expand

LITTLE ROCK – Four of Arkansas’s regular public dove hunting locations that have drawn intense opening weekend pressure in recent seasons are being converted to permit-only hunting for the upcoming season’s first two days.

Rob Goshien forwarded to us a photo of his daughter's first fish, which she caught last week. She landed this 5.2-pound bass on a cricket "'all by herself," a proud papa reported. "She has a love for fishing, and we had been catching a lot of big bream on beds," Rob says.
