AGFC’s Youth Summer Fish Camps Wrap Up at Dry Run Creek, Little Red River

LITTLE ROCK – The Fish Camp program run by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s Education Division has seen big growth since starting in 2013, from a couple of free events based out of Little Rock to several camps held throughout the state in 2022, with more anticipated in coming years. This season’s schedule wraps up later this month with a three-day Fly-fishing Camp at Dry Run Creek off the Norfork Dam tailwater in north Arkansas and a three-day Fish Camp at JFK Park next to Greers Ferry Dam in Heber Springs, in north-central Arkansas.

Guide Mike Winkler reports that the cooling water of the Little Red River feels great in this heat wave and the fish have been biting "even when the weatherman says it's going to feel like it's a 110-degree index." Mike's customer, Doug Lillibridge who recently relocated along with his wife to Heber Springs from Fresno, California, shows off his first Arkansas brown trout catch, which he caught on a pheasant tail nymph while fly-fishing on the Little Red.
New Deputy Director Carner has Arkansas outdoors in his blood

LITTLE ROCK – Working throughout the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission are people in various divisions whose youthful experiences pointed them in the direction of a work life with an outdoors conservation agency. Brad Carner, whose family in Lake City (Craighead County) on the St. Francis River was immersed in hunting, trapping, and fishing and whose hunting exploits were experienced on public lands, is one such agency employee.

An angler from Eureka Springs named Rick, who was fishing with guide Austin Kennedy in the early morning mist of the Beaver Lake Dam tailwater in northwest Arkansas, landed a nice walleye from the tailwater this week.
Anglers can catch unlimited numbers of Big Lake fish starting July 1

MANILA – Licensed anglers have the opportunity to fish without catch limits on Big Lake, situated within the Big Lake National Wildlife Refuge, beginning Friday, July 1, as federal plans to renovate the refuge begin in earnest this week. This emergency action by Big Lake NWR and the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, which manages the lake’s fish for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, is effective through Sept. 30.
