Lake Elmdale erosion-repair project gets nod from commissioners to start

LITTLE ROCK – Arkansas Game and Fish Commissioners gave the go-ahead April 23 to use $1,000,000 from AGFC coffers to begin work on repairing the spillway at Lake Elmdale in Northwest Arkansas.

Anglers can find additional golden rainbows in White River

NORFORK – More golden rainbow trout have been stocked in the White River system below Bull Shoals Lake dam. About 500 of the rainbow trout that have a color variation making them appear a bright golden yellow were part of a shipment of 10,000 rainbow trout stocked Monday from the access here to other points upriver toward the dam.

GILLETT – Samuel Yarberry of Bryant landed in the Arkansas state fishing record book, taking a striped mullet with unrestricted tackle March 27.

Martin Tinnin caught this tank of a rainbow trout Sunday on the White River while fishing with guide Casey Hughes. With heavy water releases at Bull Shoals Dam, the river was running at about 20,000 cfs, but the high water didn't seem to interfere with this big fish's feeding schedule. Hughes took advantage of a caddis hatch in slack water to put Tinnin on this 26-inch rainbow that was released right after the photo was taken.

RUSSELLVILLE – It’s natural that anglers and conservationists would be concerned about heavy flooding and how it could affect Arkansas fisheries. Spawning periods that coincided with major spring floods last year will be affected. Some fish production years aren’t as good as others, but it’s okay, biologists say. This helps keep sport fish and the populations of the fish they feed on in balance.
