Shiloh Christian, Accuracy in Motion win AYSSP east regional

Strong winds were prevalent for a second straight weekend at the Jacksonville Shooting Complex, but by Saturday the 129 senior division trap-shooting teams competing were greeted with plenty of sunshine and a little less wind for the Arkansas Youth Shooting Sports Program’s west regional qualifiers. Shiloh Christian School’s senior high team won the senior division on Saturday, while the Accuracy In Motion/Gunsmoke club team from Madison, Washington and Carroll counties bested 84 teams in the breezy conditions of Friday’s junior division regional.

Unattended fawns likely not abandoned

Each spring, thousands of Arkansas deer give birth to fawns. And each year, biologists with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission get calls from worried conservation-minded individuals who happen across one of these young deer sitting still in the tall grasses where it is hiding. But that abandoned fawn likely isn’t abandoned at all. In fact, its mother may be just out of sight, waiting for you to leave so she may tend to her young. 

2017-18 urban deer hunt application period open

The application period for Arkansas’s special urban bowhunts for the 2017-18 hunting season is now open and will run until 6:30 p.m., August 18. 

Fourche Creek featured on Arkansas Wildlife Television

The new boat ramp at Benny Craig Park on Fourche Creek was the focus of this week’s kickoff to National Travel and Tourism Week in Little Rock. As part of the celebration, guided float tours took visitors through a section of this special stream flowing right through Arkansas’s capital city. Arkansas Wildlife Television also featured Fourche Creek and the recreational opportunities available there in its most recent episode, which aired last weekend. 

Hot Springs resident lands $1,000 while fishing for dinner

Maurice Bradford of Hot Springs was fishing from the bank near the Andrew Hulsey Fish Hatchery on Lake Hamilton, looking to land enough fish for a Saturday evening dinner. At around 8 p.m., fishing with crickets, he snagged something better: A $1,000 prize fish in the 2017 $86,000 Hot Springs Fishing Challenge. It was a half-pound bluegill 8.5 inches long. 

Youth fishing tournament anglers encouraged to dump some brush on the AGFC

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission has created a new award program specifically for youth fishing tournament organizations to help do their part in improving aquatic habitat in Arkansas reservoirs. Fishing tournament organizations affiliated with an Arkansas junior high, high school or college can apply for an award ranging from $500 to $1,000 to offset the costs of building and sinking brush piles and other habitat in Arkansas lakes.

Weekend tragedies a stern reminder of the dangers of swift currents

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission would like to remind everyone to be cautious and use good judgment when driving around water or deciding to go through with previously planned trips involving on-the-water recreation. Wildlife officers and other swift-water recovery teams were involved in many operations during the last week, but the work is far from over.
