CWD-positive deer found in south Arkansas

STRONG – The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission today confirmed that a hunter-harvested white-tailed deer taken in Union County tested positive for chronic wasting disease.

LITTLE ROCK — The first segment of Arkansas’s regular duck season has come to a close. But that doesn’t mean all of the shooting has stopped. Thanks to special rules enacted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, duck hunters 15 and younger, as well as active-duty military personnel and veterans, may hunt waterfowl during Arkansas’s third annual Special Youth and Active Duty Military and Veteran Waterfowl Hunt Dec. 4.

December doves offer second shot

LITTLE ROCK – With the opening days of deer and duck seasons in the rearview mirror, some hunters may be looking for a new way to enjoy the outdoors without the crowds. Unlike its original celebration on Labor Day Weekend, the second split of dove hunting holds little fanfare, but still offers excellent opportunities to take aim at some of the most challenging targets in the wingshooting world.

AGFC hosting trout-fishing fun in Pine Bluff, Russellville

LITTLE ROCK — The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission will host two special winter fishing derbies from 9 a.m. to noon Dec. 4, to celebrate the holidays and the opportunity to catch rainbow trout in Family and Community Fishing Program locations. Youths do not need a license or trout stamp to fish in Arkansas, and each derby is free. Anglers 16 and older are welcome to fish as well, but they must have a valid AGFC fishing license. They must also have a trout stamp if they wish to keep any trout they catch. Both the license and stamp are available to purchase at www.agfc.com. Anglers must bring their own bait and tackle, and chairs or coolers to sit on are strongly encouraged. Registration is required for both events.

Clean slate waiting for water at Lake Monticello

MONTICELLO — After two years of drawdowns and construction work, the city of Monticello was able to close the gates at its namesake lake in Drew County last week, hoping to see the fish and recreational opportunities in the reservoir flourish again once the lake refills.
