LONOKE — It’s not often that a fish is the subject of a presidential address, but that’s exactly what happened in 1987 when President Ronald Reagan proclaimed June 25 National Catfish Day. In keeping with the 34-year annual observance, we’ve compiled a few great ways to enjoy one of Arkansas’s most eligible sport fish.

REDFIELD — Join the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission for a fishing event at 9 a.m., June 26 as we celebrate the latest addition to the Family and Community Fishing Program, Redfield City Park. All anglers must register through the AGFC’s registration portal at www.register-ed.com/events/view/169207 to ensure enough space is available at the event.
Commission pursues opportunity with ASU to expand Cypress Bayou Wildlife Management Area

LITTLE ROCK — The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission voted unanimously at today’s meeting to authorize the agency’s director to enter into a 10-year cooperative agreement with Arkansas State University to manage a 160-acre tract bordering Cypress Bayou WMA in White County and allow public hunting access to that property under the current regulations of the wildlife management area.

Judsen Coon was fishing in a bass tournament on Lake Ouachita last weekend when a big cat interruped his bass angling efforts: a 55-pound blue catfish, to be exact. Coon reports that he caught the cat on a 10.5 Red Bug Ol' Monster in 3 feet of water.

Justin Yancey and his children, Ava, age 8, and Gavin, age 5, had a blast this Memorial Day weekend.On Saturday, Ava caught a 22-inch brown trout on the White River with Gavin netting the fish. On Monday, Yancey reports, both kids had fun catching trout at Dry Run Creek.

Nick Harris of Little Rock found the bream on fire Sunday afternoon at Lake Maumelle. These are a couple of the 20 or so he caught in the first hour of fishing. With the full moon upon us here as we move into June, the bream will be spawning and this will be a big weekend for fishing. Consider taking a kid along for a great day and evening of bream fishing and an experience the youngster won't forget. Photo by Randy Zellers.
