Happiness is a nice slab crappie on the end of a hook at DeGray Lake for Happy Caldwell, who was fishing recently with guide John Duncan on one of the nicer days in southwest Arkansas.

HOT SPRINGS — The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s Fishing Education Program is joining forces with USA Bass and USAngling to put on a special youth fishing education event during the upcoming 2023 Pan American Bass Fishing Championship 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Sept. 9 at Andrew Hulsey State Fish Hatchery on Lake Hamilton.

Rich Arnold from Ida, Louisiana, was drift-fishing a Pheasant Tail soft hackle alongside the moss beds in the deep water of the Little Red River when this nice brown trout decided to take his fly while he was fishing with guide Mike Winkler.

Keep it between the buoys

LITTLE ROCK – The heat of summer often leads anglers to large rivers where current breaks can position bass and other sport fish for fishing that lasts longer than the first hour after sunrise. But traveling on a river like the Arkansas and navigating some of Arkansas’s shallower, more cover-filled reservoirs can be a daunting task for people who don’t know what all those buoys and channel markers mean. How do you know which side of the buoys to stay on when traveling up or down a river?

Crappie were on the menu in the past few weeks on Millwood Lake, as Mackey Harvin, a guide for Millwood Lake Guide Service, took a few clients to his favorite holes for some action. Bass have slowed down lately at what is one of the state's best bass fishing location, with the lake in a 2-foot ordered drawdown and the heat keeping most anglers off the water during the hottest parts of the day, but crappie provide a nice target, too.

Hayden Greene, a 17-year-old, recently caught this nice catfish on Lee Creek in Van Buren. After a rainstorm has moved through, Hayden was using a 4-pound test line and crappie jig when he hooked this cat in 4 feet of water. 

New AGFC Fisheries chief Laird hatches plan for tackling big projects

Tommy Laird, a 33-year veteran with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s Fisheries Division, didn’t ever see himself as chief of the division, but he also didn’t count on AGFC Director Austin Booth’s persuasive skills when it came time to fill the role in June.
