New AGFC Fisheries chief Laird hatches plan for tackling big projects

Tommy Laird, a 33-year veteran with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s Fisheries Division, didn’t ever see himself as chief of the division, but he also didn’t count on AGFC Director Austin Booth’s persuasive skills when it came time to fill the role in June.

Lake Charles in northeast Arkansas is turning out some nice bass. Justin Yancey caught this near 6-pounder and another that topped 6 pounds in Lake Charles in recent weeks. He says the bite has been slow but steady and he has been using moving baits.

HEBER SPRINGS — The recipe for healthy aquatic habitat on many Arkansas lakes isn’t quite complete without a fair share of vegetables, but that ingredient has been lacking at Greers Ferry Lake and many other Army Corps of Engineers reservoirs for many years. An intensified effort by Arkansas Game and Fish Commission fisheries biologists may prove to be the secret sauce for an improved fishing experience if a new cooking technique pans out.
