Free CWD testing available on opening weekend of deer season in 11 Arkansas counties

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission will have voluntary biological sampling stations set up in each of the 11 counties contained in the Chronic Wasting Disease Management Zone this weekend for hunters to get their deer tested for free.

Arkansas' "big" deer season is approaching, but kids will get first shot.The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission's Special Youth Modern Gun Deer Hunt is set for Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 4-5, across the state. The hunt is open in all private land zones and most wildlife management areas. The only areas not open on those days will be wildlife management areas where permits are required for deer hunting.

AGFC partners with taxidermists and vets to offer voluntary CWD testing

Since chronic wasting disease was discovered in Arkansas in February 2016, biologists have collected thousands of samples from deer and elk taken by hunters, from targeted animals showing signs of the disease and from road-killed deer throughout the state. In addition to samples taken to establish the disease’s spread and prevalence, the AGFC is offering a convenient way for hunters to have their deer tested for CWD at participating taxidermists and veterinarians.

Weather-resistant game tags, AGFC app add more options to tag deer

In response to many requests from hunters, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission is supplying waterproof courtesy tags to regional offices and license vendors throughout the state to help hunters make the transition to the newly revised hunting license system.

Leftover WMA deer hunt permits available online Sept. 26

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission has many WMA draw hunt permits that were not drawn during the regular drawing period that will be available in a first-come, first-served online sale beginning at 8 a.m., Sept. 26. 

Hunter observations can help complete wildlife management puzzle

Deer hunters can use their smartphones in order to assist the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission with wildlife management efforts. The AGFC’s free Deer Hunting Observation Survey is part of the AGFC app that can be downloaded to either Apple or android smartphones.  This mobile survey quickly allows hunters to record sightings of game species such as deer, bear, quail, turkey, and furbearers and also nongame species such as feral hogs while hunting.

AGFC holding public meeting about CWD in Van Buren County

Although chronic wasting disease has not been found in Van Buren County, it’s close. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission wants to give the public an opportunity to learn more about the disease at a public meeting in Clinton. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m., Sept. 19, at the Petit Jean Electric Cooperative Community Room at 270 Quality Drive.
