Director, biologists mull changes needed in flooded Hurricane Lake WMA

BALD KNOB – Kayakers would have found the South Unit of Henry Gray Hurricane Lake Wildlife Management Area inviting in June. In fact, Arkansas Game and Fish Commission Wildlife Management Division biologists had placed blue markers on trees that would be easily recognizable to paddlers who use the AGFC’s water trails around the state.
Landowners encouraged to enroll rice fields in new habitat/public access program

LITTLE ROCK — The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission is encouraging Arkansas rice producers to take advantage of a habitat incentive program that enables them to earn extra money while maintaining rice production on their fields that are within 10 miles of a WMA that has a waterfowl management focus. AGFC offering payments to rice farmers for waterfowl habitat and hunting access

LITTLE ROCK — The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission is accepting applications from rice field owners to enroll in its expanded Waterfowl Rice Incentive Conservation Enhancement program. Landowners may receive as much as $150 per acre annually while still maintaining the current production of rice fields by following post-harvest guidelines and allowing permit-based hunts during waterfowl season on their properties. The program is aimed at enrolling rice fields within 10 miles of many AGFC wildlife management areas popular with duck hunters.

An enormous number of snows, blues and Ross's geese were seen in a field in Arkansas County not far from Brett Morgan Halowell Reservoir last week. The Light Goose Conservation Order for hunting these geese is in effect through Feb. 7 and from Feb. 9-April 25 throughout Arkansas.

The second split of Arkansas’s waterfowl season is underway, and high water in some portions of the state has made hunting on some public areas near the White River a bit more challenging with many more flooded acres of habitat for the ducks to spread out. Hunters are, however, seeing some good success from fields procured through Arkansas’s Waterfowl Rice Incentive Conservation Enhancement Program.
First statewide youth and veterans waterfowl hunt this weekend

LITTLE ROCK – This Saturday marks the first time in Arkansas history that members of the armed services and veterans will have a special day in the wetlands chasing ducks and geese. The Special Active Duty Military and Veteran Waterfowl Hunt will take place alongside Arkansas’s Special Youth Waterfowl Hunt Dec. 7, 2019 and Feb. 8, 2020.
