With a slew of spinners, crankbaits, grubs and other bait choices available, we asked three crappie-fishing fools who work for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission a simple question: “When you look at the hook, what’s on the end of your line?”

Northeast Arkansas yields state record goldeye

MANILA – Jamie Wilhoite caught a goldeye a few years back, though at the time she and her husband, Homer, didn’t know immediately what it was. They took a photo to identify it later and gave the fish away, then wondered if that fish’s weight might have exceeded the then-listed state record for goldeye.

AGFC continues to cut new roads on the water

MAYFLOWER — Anglers on Craig D. Campbell Lake Conway Reservoir will again see improved infrastructure to help them navigate its waters safely with a new phase of boat lane renovations later this month. Contractors working with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission will use a specially modified barge to cut stumps under the water’s surface that have posed navigational hazards for decades and given the lake the nickname “Ol’ Stumpy,” from its anglers. 

Florida bass boost being prepared for Lake Ouachita

MT. IDA — Lake Ouachita will receive another dose of Florida bass through direct stockings for anglers, but this year will see an added boost of Florida bass through the lake’s nursery pond as well as direct stockings.

Anglers contribute catch to conservation

ROGERS — Anglers competing in the Beaver Lake Crappie Series L.O. VanZant Memorial Tournament on Beaver Lake did more than show off their skills last weekend, they also contributed to the future of fishing in northwest Arkansas. Thanks to a partnership between tournament directors and the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, 130 crappie were placed into the lake’s nursery pond to lay their eggs and produce hundreds of thousands of crappie fingerlings that will be released into the lake later in the year.
