CAMDEN – As crappie across the state are hitting their stride, many anglers are relying on the old faithful offering of a fathead minnow or “shiner” dangling from a size 2 Aberdeen hook. There’s no doubt that there’s nothing like the allure of a real meal to fish, but many anglers do just as well using soft-plastic imitations.

Ramp renovation to temporarily close Bear Creek Lake access

MARIANNA – Much needed repairs to the boat ramp at Bear Creek Lake in Lee County may put a damper on some fishing plans this spring. Contractors working with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission will be renovating the boat ramp on the east side of the dam, which will require the ramp to be closed for roughly six weeks, beginning next Monday.

White River Refuge seeks comments on proposed hunting permit fee increase

ST. CHARLES – Dale Bumpers White River national Wildlife Refuge is seeking public comments on a proposal to increase its permit fee from $12.50 to $25, and expand it to include all hunting, fishing camping and boating access on a yearly basis.

Work begins on new Horseshoe Lake boat ramp

HUGHES – Anglers in east Arkansas soon will have an improved free launching site on Horseshoe Lake in Crittenden County. The Nancy and Pat Bonds Horseshoe Lake Access on the southwest corner of the lake will be temporarily closed to complete a major renovation for anglers to enjoy this gem of the Delta. The access is scheduled to reopen at the beginning of June.

These man-made crosses of a white bass and their striped bass cousins also cause a bit of controversy between anglers who fish for them and those who prefer other species.
