Feed the hungry with freezer cleanout

LITTLE ROCK – Arkansas Hunters Feeding the Hungry will hold a special “freezer cleanout day” at the Bass Pro Shops in Little Rock, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sept. 19. Hunters can free up some freezer space for the coming hunting season and have a chance to win prizes, courtesy of Bass Pro Shops.

Record sales of fishing and camping equipment and crowded boat ramps and trailheads all speak to the renewed interest Arkansans have in our natural world. One conservation-minded group has gone the extra distance to help protect these resources amid the increased usage.
Partnership promotes quail at Petit Jean

DANVILLE — The Yell County Wildlife Federation, Arkansas Tech University Fisheries and Wildlife Society and Arkansas Game and Fish Commission recently combined efforts to pave the way for better habitat on Petit Jean River Wildlife Management Area in Yell County. The team gathered for a day of work Feb. 22, removing undesirable trees on both openlands and forested areas to aid in habitat management on the area.
Trout Unlimited holding annual meeting in Rogers

ROGERS -- Trout Unlimited, the nation’s oldest and largest coldwater conservation organization, is holding its annual meeting in Rogers this week. Hosted by the Arkansas TU council, the meeting will bring together more than 200 TU staff members and volunteer leaders for several days of meetings and informational sessions.
Recycled utility poles offer endangered bats refuge

WALNUT RIDGE — Last Thursday crews from Craighead Electric Cooperative, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, Arkansas State University, SWCA Environmental Consultants, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Arkansas Ecological Services Field Office placed special surrogate structures on Shirey Bay Rainey Brake Wildlife Management Area to encourage the continued use of the area by Indiana bats, an endangered species native to Arkansas.
AGFC recognizes northwest Arkansas partners in conservation

ROGERS — The setting of duck season dates and the proposal to increase Arkansas’s trout stamp may have taken the spotlight during last week’s Commission meeting at the John Q. Hammons Center, but the real stars of the conservation-focused meeting were three of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s long-standing partners in promoting the outdoors and working to improve our state’s natural resources. The AGFC officially recognized The Watershed Conservation Resource Center, Bentonville High School, and Benton County Quail with Conservation Partner awards at the beginning of Thursday’s meeting.
Statewide poll shows 98 percent support for protection of drinking water sources, 80 percent support for Arkansas Game and Fish Commission

LITTLE ROCK — The Nature Conservancy in Arkansas recently conducted a statewide poll of likely voters to better understand conservation interests and priorities. Protection of drinking water sources and conservation of fish and wildlife habitats ranked highest among those polled.
