Arkansas Wildlife Fishing Report

May 23, 2018

This smallmouth bass was caught on the lower Buffalo River using a quarter-ounce black Rooster Tail inline spinnerbait. It was returned to the waters and is waiting for another angler. Our reporter said the bite is good on the Buffalo River, while some excellent reports on largemouth bass and stripers came from several areas.

With the sudden soaring of air temperatures into the 80s and even reaching 90, the cool waters of the north Arkansas trout streams such as the Spring River (photo) are already the place to be. Millwood Lake guide Mike Siefert has been enjoying a hot lake of late. Largemouth bass ranging from 6 to 11 pounds have been caught at Millwood in recent weeks by regular anglers and tournament competitors, Mike says.

Most of our reports this week indicate that the warming water has the crappie and bass moving up shallow, while the bream are also beginning to show in places. We didn't personally run into any daylight striper action at Lake Ouachita last week, maybe because of the full moon, but Mike Bailey and his guests caught a few recently in Beaver Lake (pictured) in northwest Arkansas.

The rainbow trout are biting on the Spring River in North Arkansas. Bass are in spawn in various lakes, more so in the north now, and stripers and more are biting in Lake Ouachita.

The high waters of the late winter/early spring and recent cold have kept a lot of angers off the Spring River, but guide Mark Crawford says in this week's report that this might be the perfect time to go after some trout there. Guide Greg Seaton said he had a marvelous day last week on the Little Red River as well.
